‘Saul Steinberg, artista’ at Fundación Juan March

20/12/2024

Saul Steinberg (Râmnicu Sarat, Rumanía, 1914–Nueva York, 1999) studied architecture in Milan, city to which he arrived at 19 years of age after fleeing anti-Semitism in his home country of Romania. Shortly later, the rise of fascism forced him to leave again. During his first period in the United States – after stays in Lisbon, Milan again, and Dominican Republic – he obtained a US visa and could enroll in the Army, where he trained the resistance against the Japanese in different countries of the globe while drawing satirical cartoons against the Nazis.

All these experiences were the genesis of his vast production – in which he often included fake stamps, texts or certificates in tribute to his travels – which is difficult to pigeonhole into a specific discipline or artistic trend, but that has a peculiar sense of humor as common denominator. Despite his chameleonic activity, Steinberg became known mainly for his collaborations with The New Yorker, a professional relationship that lasted over five years.

Until January 2025 – but with plans to expand starting February that same year – the Fundación Juan March in Madrid presents the first complete retrospective of his work carried out in Spain, and covers all of the artist’s facets and how they related to each other throughout his life. The show includes close to 400 pieces from different private collections and European and American institutions: drawings, murals, collages, paintings, engravings, photographs, artist’s books or magazines. Among them, some of the more than 100 works that the Saul Steinberg Foundation has donated to the Madrid institution.
