The encounter of Europe and America since 1492 can be considered one of the most significant events in universal history. Europeans perceived it as a ‘discovery’ and claimed authority to colonize the vast territories, but the colonists were immediately awed by the majestic American landscape: a huge ‘new world,’ abundant and different. The land itself could be inhospitable and dangerous, but with its geographical wonders and natural resources it was perceived as a rich paradise full of opportunities. The American continent quickly captured the imagination of people in all corners of the world.
Through the centuries, a utopian drive has fueled massive migrations to America. The Franciscans in Mexico, the Puritans in New England, and the Jesuits in Argentina envisioned America as a Christian paradise: a pristine place, ideal for a purer relaunch of their religions.
