In the wake of the shelving of Zaha Hadid’s project, the Japan Sports Council organized a second competition for the design of the new Tokyo National Olympic Stadium in the Shinjuku ward of the capital, and the winner was the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. This time with wood as the main material, the proposal presents a facade formed by tiered terraces where there will be a strong vegetal presence, in harmony with the surroundings. The building is programmed to open by the end of the year 2019, in time for the 2020 Summer and Paralympic Games.
