“I write and design from the inside of a medieval town block, distanced from the street, illuminated by the light of a cyclopean courtyard… a void shared by rain, plants, the sun, shadows, classical music aired by Spanish National Radio, and me.” Juan Luis Trillo de Leyva knew how to imbue his buildings and writings with an exquisite sensitivity that would nourish several generations of student at the Seville School of Architecture, where he was a chair-holding professor since 1989. The author of works of silent elegance, such as the refurbishment of the Augustinian convent of Jerez de la Frontera, in the province of Cádiz, Trillo also directed the journal Periferia, so we his companions in the magazine world join his colleagues within the architecture profession in mourning his demise on 25 November.
