An allergic reaction put a sudden end to the life of Jean-Louis Cohen last 7 August, just months after the demise of his wife, the sociologist Monique Eleb. Born in Paris and trained as an architect, he was an expert on the Soviet world, although his broad range of interests and his analytical powers led him to the writing of major titles on diverse themes of modern architecture, including the Americanism of the avant-gardes and design during World War II. His career in academe – he taught in several institutions in Paris, and since 1994 at New York University – went parallel with a prolific trajectory as a curator. The pages of our magazines many a time benefited from his always informed articles, as in the special issues that Arquitectura Viva published in the heat of 9-11 and the war in Ukraine, or the AV monograph ‘Le Corbusier: An Atlas of Landscapes,’ which used his exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art as an opportunity to pay tribute to the Swiss-French master on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of his death.
