Manchester Beginnings: Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
I was interested win architecture and design from school, and probably like a lot of boys, I was interested in model aircraft, construction kits, making models, meccano... all those things. I have also been interested in sketching and drawing for as long as I can remember, but it was only relatively late that I made the possibility of a connection between those interests and being an architect. And this I think was because of a particular social background, the kind of context that I grew up, where you would never stay on at school or go to university or follow any form of higher education... you would predictably leave school early. My interest in design and architecture was in fact fuelled by visits to the public library where I think I became perhaps more knowledgeable on the subject than I actually realised at the time...[+]
