In his memoirs about everyday life in Nazi Germany, written in 1940 but published a year after his death in 1999, the historian and journalist Raimund Pretzel – better known by his pseudonym, Sebastian Haffner – invoked an anti-fascist colleague’s warning: “Sceptical comments are no use nowadays… We republicans must howl with the wolves.” Many Germans followed the advice and two recently published books explore the meek acceptance – on the part of common folk – of the horror that was unfolding around...
