A black and compact shadow cuts – free of any obstacle – across the grid-patterned surfaces of the new square built by Aldo Rossi in Perugia, as if this empty urban space were the face of an immense sundial. The design of this deserted square and the buildings that surround it is geometrically pure and faintly familiar: it has been created as if it were a life-sized homage to the solitary urban landscapes of Giorgio De Chirico and Edward Hopper. The square has a size and shape in harmony with the cherished public spaces of Italy's past; however, it is so devoid of any human activity that the intruder is forced to contemplate the imperceptible movement of shadows instead of the comings and goings of people...[+]
