The firm of the Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, BIG, has won the competition for the new flagship factory of San Pellegrino, the Italian brand of sparkling natural mineral water and an assortment of real-fruit soda beverages. The location is a delicious Alpine landscape close to Bergamo, but Ingels has not succumbed to the temptation to imitate the scenery. Instead, he proposes an extrusion of a geometric pattern inspired in Italian architecture: the slender concrete arcade repeated to form a continuous space with luminous gaps that open generously to views of the surroundings. The reference to Italy is completed with a series of porticoes and squares that serve to give the complex a certain civic air.
