Dionisio Hernández Gil

The Cáceres-born Dionisio Hernández Gil died on 21 December. After his years at the Madrid School of Architecture and the Academy of Spain in Rome, he was given the opportunity to restore the San Benito monastery in Alcántara. This baptismal experience made him understand the architectural craft as a subtle dialogue with history, and encouraged him to devote his life to preserving monuments. A mission he also carried out from the platform of institutions – he was Director General of Fine Arts as well as head of the Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute – and to which we owe, among other works, the conversion of a Baroque hospital into the Extremadura Assembly or the revamp of the Prado Museum’s roofs.
