Tierras Temporary Housing in Palenque (Chiapas)

The extraction of latex from rubber trees is one of the main economic activities of the region where the city of Palenque is located, in the southernmost Mexican state of Chiapas. Beside a plantation rises the Tierra project of Manuel Cervantes Estudio, which provides dwellings, a kitchen, a dining room, and a bathroom for the workers and their families. The proportions and the arrangement of the modules are adapted to the context. They are positioned parallel to the rows of trees, in a way that harnesses the shade these give.

The architecture addresses a warm and humid climate through passive strategies that maximize bioclimatic efficiency. The construction system presents frames of reinforced concrete on a platform raised off the ground to optimize cross ventilation and prevent transmission of humidity and heat. A bamboo lattice wraps the modules. An opening in the roof makes it easier for hot air to exit.
