Watermoon Tea House in Changhua

Located high on a hill of the county-administered city of Changhua, this sculptural building of concrete is surrounded by an oval-shaped pond. The project took off from the client’s request for thermal comfort without artificial air conditioning systems. The curving staggered roof facilitates control of airflows inside, as do the pivoting doors of Burmese Teak wood, which also bring in sunlight. The vertical dislocation produced between the roof’s curved plates and the horizontal plate that covers the front platform lets the sun shine on the tea table during the coldest season. The pavilion rises like an island in the middle of the pond, elevated 60 centimeters over the water level on the east side and 30 on the west. The level changes on the pond allow for a natural water flow, increasing the relative humidity in the air that flows into the space when it is hot.
