Cuntan International Cruise Centre in Chongqing

MAD Architects

A project drawn up by Ma Yansong, MAD Architects, in collaboration with the China Academy of Building Research (CASR) is the winner in the competition to design an international cruise hub at the city of Chongqing’s Cuntan Port. It will include a 15,000-square-meter cruise terminal and 50,000 square meters of commercial space. The site is currently occupied by a cargo terminal with huge orange-hued gantry cranes. These have provided inspiration for a scheme of six buildings elevated on leaning columns, clad in aluminum, and interconnected by six footbridges forming the 43-meter-long Yangtze River Skywalk, with stores, restaurants, and views over the river. Below these ‘floating’ constructions is the new Cruise Ship Landscape Park, which joins two preexisting parks, creating 100,000 square meters of green zones, and the Cruise Ship Hall, the new terminal embedded in the ground. Construction of the Cuntan International Cruise Centre is to start in November 2022, for completion in 2027.
