I had wanted to collaborate with Otl Aicher on the graphics and signage for the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank. Frustratingly, the politics of commissioning on that project ruled it out, but I remember someone asking me why we needed him and responding, “Because he is the best living designer in the world.” I could have added that he was a co-founder and subsequently the principal of the Ulm School of Design, and how he virtually invented the pictogram in his work for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.
