Winning pavilions at the 2025 TAC! Festival

27/05/2025

The winners of the fourth edition of the TAC! Urban Architecture Festival, sponsored by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda (MIVAU) in collaboration with the Arquia Foundation, have been announced. The pavilion Espartal will be shown at Casa Mediterráneo in Alicante from 16 October to 14 November, and De roca madre at Plaza de Stagno in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria from 30 October to 28 November.

The jury of the competition has rewarded projects that stand out for the connection they forge with their contexts and for their symbolic value. Designed by ELE Arkitektura, GA Estudio, Florencia Galecio, and Juan Gubbins, Espartal rethinks the use of esparto grass as a traditional material for crafts in Spain’s Mediterranean areas. The project creates a suspended ceiling of esparto that sifts sunlight and gives thermal comfort. It seeks to weave a link between the farming landscape and the urban surroundings, highlighting material culture from an environmental and functional angle.

For its part, De roca madre – by Alejandro Carrasco Hidalgo, Eduardo Cilleruelo Terán, Alberto Martínez García, and Andrea Molina Cuadro – recreates a geological and Anthropocene section at Plaza de Stagno. This pavilion uses local volcanic stones and recycled plastics -- gathered by the Precious Plastic Gran Canaria collective – to exalt traditional Canarian architecture and denounce the accumulation of wastes on the coasts of the islands.

Both winning teams will receive 15,000 euros and a budget of 90,000 to build their pavilions.

In the words of Iñaqui Carnicero, Secretary General of Urban Agenda, Housing, and Architecture and president of the jury, “the TAC! Festival is committed to architectural quality as a driver of urban and social transformation.” This initiative, intended as an experimentation space for young architects, continues to generate dialogue between the city, architecture, and citizens, through proposals bearing a strong commitment to taking care of the environment.
