Mies van der Rohe Awards 2013

From Reikiavik to Madrid

The Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Center in Reykjavik, by the Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects, designed in collaboration with the Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson and the local studio Batteriid, is the 2013 winner of the biennial Mies van der Rohe Award, which comes with a 60,000 euro endowment and seeks to acknowledge and promote quality in contemporary European architectural production. The winning entry, with a unique facade inspired by the crystalline formations and basalt rocks of the Icelandic landscape, carried the day over four other finalists: the Market Hall in Ghent (Belgium), by Robbrecht
