Martín Chirino

1925-2019

30/04/2019

A leading Spanish abstract sculptor of the 20th century breathed his last on 11 March in Madrid. He had very recently turned 94. Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canarias, Martín Chirino was among the founders and leaders of the group El Paso, which revived Spanish art after the postwar period, and the 1960s decade saw him embark on a career of his own in which he traversed an array of languages. Chirino also occupied important cultural administration posts (he served as president of the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid and director of the Atlantic Center of Modern Art in Las Palmas), and oversaw the creation in 2015 of the foundation that bears his name.
