Conceived as an alternative to the conventional circuits of art, Manifiesta, Europe’s premier itinerant biennial contemporary art festival, holds its 2018 event in Palermo, Sicily, from June to September. Curated by Bregtje van der Haak, Andrés Jaque, Ippolito Pestellini, and Mirjam Varadinis, the show benefits from the participation of fifty artists and architects, who have put emphasis on questions having to do with the territory, geopolitics, and Sicilian affairs. The result has not convinced everyone, but the statistics compiled by OMA in ‘Atlas Palermo’ – a volume that has provided the conceptial bases for the exhibition – will remain. The theme is ‘The Planetary Garden: Cultivating Coexistence.’
