Lyon at Museo ICO

Nostalgic Chronicle

In the context of the PHotoEspaña 2020 festival, the Museo ICO in Madrid is until 17 January hosting an exhibition that documents Lower Manhattan’s dramatic transformation in the 1960s through the retina of the New York photographer Danny Lyon. His camera captured the historic neighborhood’s destruction by the cranes, excavators, and bulldozers of heartless real estate speculation, when whole blocks of low brick buildings had to give way to more profitable office towers, including the now fallen twins of the World Trade Center. Halfway between objective photojournalism and subjective, personal experience, Lyon traces the map of a city where demolition workers are the only signs of life, evoking what once upon a time was and never again will be.
