1922-2019

30/04/2019

One of the masters of modern architecture in the United States passed away at the age of 96 last 1 March in Guilford, Connecticut. Hailing from Ireland, Kevin Roche traveled to America in 1948 to study under Mies van der Rohe at the Illinois Institute of Technology and work at the firm of Eero Saarinen, where he became principal design associate and served as such until the latter’s death in the year 1961. Roche on his own specialized in corporate architecture, successfully working out the elegant language of the eclectic modernity then in vogue, and ending up carrying out masterworks like the Ford Foundation Building in New York City. He was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1982.
