In the course of a journey that pulled them out of her home in Cascais, designed by Souto de Moura, and included a stop at Tate Britain in London, paintings by Paula Rego now arrive at the Picasso Museum of Málaga to present an overwhelming imagination and a fierce commitment that, alas, were extinguished this past 8 June. From the canvases and collages that in the 1970s challenged the order of the Estado Novo and condemned Portuguese colonization, to the aggressive pastel paintings of feminine figures fighting for empowerment in the new millennium, the exhibition on view through 21 August showcases an oeuvre that constitutes a collection of narratives by a passionate storyteller.
