The same Cuenca where he was born, which awakened his early aesthetic inclinations and saw his most important projects go up, also saw him take his last breath on 7 September. Gustavo Torner was headed to be a forest engineer but soon gave up drawing botanical plates to embark on any other expedition that pursued beauty through painting, sculpture, stained-glass windows, exhibitions, or costume designs. In the eighty-year career of this total artist endowed with an insatiable curiosity, the two jewels he gave his city shine supreme: the Museum of Abstract Art, which he created with his friend Fernando Zóbel. bringing the most select specimens of Spanish art to the gorges of the river Huécar, and Espacio Torner, which harbors in the old Church of San Pablo a fine sampling of his overwhelming creativity.
