Elephant World, Dorfman Prize

31/10/2019

The Thai architect Booserm Premthada, born in a Bangkok slum, made a name for himself with his early projects, so respectful towards context and local building traditions (see Arquitectura Viva 151 and 200). This is certainly evident in one of his latest works, definitely his most internationally acclaimed so far, for which he has won the 2019 Dorfman Prize of Great Britain’s Royal Academy. It is a perforated sinuous tower built by artisans with local brick to serve as an elephant observatory. Endowed with the capacity to establish strong links with the people who take care of them, the pachyderms of Surin are a natural and cultural symbol of a whole region, and the new construction gives visitors to Elephant World an opportunity to watch and admire the animals from a high vantage point.
