La Cultural Landscape Foundation has bestowed the 2023 Cornelia Hahn Oberlander International Landscape Architecture Prize (Oberlander Prize), which comes with a US$100,000 award, to the Chinese architect Kongjian Yu, founder of the firm Turenscape. Yu designed the nature-based ‘sponge cities’ concept to address the urban flooding problem that climate change has accelerated, and it has been applied to tens of urbs in China and exported to numerous other countries. Some of the elements used in the ‘sponge cities’ model are constructed wetlands, greenways, ecological parks, green roofs, and permeable pavements.
