Emotion to the Wind

“In the stirred night air / the moon sways her arms.” With these opening verses of Federico García Lorca’s Romancero gitano (often translated as Gypsy Ballads), Didi-Huberman has at the Reina Sofía Museum woven a deep, intimate reflection on the power of emotion, understood as a movement, both physical and psychic or atmospheric, that shakes up the individual and society at large. Lorca and the duende of flamenco permeate the entire exhibition but there is also room for things like Goethe’s painted clouds, Nietzsche’s death mask, Le Brun’s physiognomist treatises, Israel Galván’s choreographies, Brecht’s anti-war clippings, and a Béla Tarr film tape: an exquisite visual compendium of 300 items gathered on a poetic note, and crystallizing the affinities and passions of the great theorist on image.
