Liceu Mar competition

29/07/2025

The Gran Teatre del Liceu, in collaboration with the Port of Barcelona and the administrative bodies of the consortium, is working on a second venue: Liceu Mar, to go up at the Moll d’Espanya. The project aims to create an innovative, accessible, and sustainable cultural space that combines opera and dance with contemporary creation and education. The new center will act as a catalyst for cultural revitalization, promoting a close bond between the city and the sea.

An architectural competition to be held from July 2025 to June 2026 will determine the team tasked to design and build it, and the winner will draw up a preliminary scheme and the basic project between July 2026 and April 2027.

The process is divided into two phases: the first one, not anonymous, will shortlist five teams; the second, anonymous and with titles, will produce full architectural proposals. Candidates in this phase which do not turn out the winners but obtain a minimum of 50 points will receive 25,000 euros as compensation.

The building will encompass an area of approximately 9,000 square meters, and opening day is programmed for 2032. The budget for the competition amounts to 1.2 million euros, financed by the Liceu and the Port of Barcelona in equal shares.
