We have quite frequently seen an architect being handed by the Prince – or Princess – of Asturias one of the accolades named in their honor. In the wake of Niemeyer, Oíza, Calatrava, Foster, Moneo, and Gehry, this October comes the turn of Tokyo-born Shigeru Ban. The novelty is that this time around, the prize does not fall under ‘Arts’ but under ‘Concord,’ in recognition of the humanitarian calling and commitment to sustainability that lie behind the awardee’s cardboard constructions: a reminder to one and all that good architecture should not be exclusively devoted to satisfying sublime aspirations. It should also place itself at the service of those most in need.[+]
