During the first months of 2023, the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei displayed a recreation of Claude Monet’s Water Lilies series, for which he used almost 650,000 Lego blocks. Just one year later, the historic space of the cinema-theater occupied by the Galleria Continua in San Gimignano has been transformed to present a selection of new works made with the famous color blocks, like a Mona Lisa covered in cake thrown by an environmental activist, and the Sleeping Venus of Giorgione with the addition of a coat hanger in a fierce criticism of abortion bans. These are displayed alongside recognizable artworks made of porcelain, wood, marble, and bamboo. The exhibition ‘Neither Nor’ is intended to convey that in such a polarized society of absolute truths, only a state of ambiguity can give thought and culture room to thrive.
