The Brooklyn firm SO-IL designed ‘Common Thread’ for the Bruges Triennial of 2024, ongoing until 1 September. Executed in collaboration with Mariana Popescu (TU Delft) and Summum Engineering, the pavilion meanders through the courtyard of a 19th-century monastery that has for this purpose been opened to the public for the first time ever. Drawing from the city’s traditional lacemaking craft, Common Thread takes the form of a woven passageway made of 3D-printed elements and tubes and textile segments made from recycled plastic bottles. The skin plays with black-and-white patterns, creating a play of transparency and opacity.
