Learning House in Nabburg

Max Otto Zitzelsberger

This is a German research project involving the wooden construction, undertaken by the architect and professor Max Otto Zitzelsberger in collaboration with students at the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU). It stands on the grounds of an open-air museum in Bavaria, the Freilandmuseum Oberpfalz, in the city of Nabburg. The volume replaces a main residence of stone and brick that was destroyed by fire, and complements the existing constructions of an old farm. Raised on concrete supports, the pavilion evokes the shape of the original countryhouse, but reinterprets the lost structure and its various additions with a contemporary language. Intended for environmental education, it uses timber extracted sustainably from the nearby forest. The wood, which came from trees felled in winter, was cut carefully on the site and dried for over a year. Because of its quality, it could be used in lower quantities.
