Nuere, Rafael Manzano Prize

White Carpenter

30/11/2016

The Valencian architect and academic Enrique Nuere has been given the 5th Rafael Manzano Prize, given by the Driehaus Foundation and coming with a prize of 50,000 euros, in recognition of his research and leadership in the recovery of traditional Spanish carpentry methods through a deciphering of the geometric rules of composition described in 17th-century manuscripts on laced carpentry. We owe to him the restoral of a craft all but forgotten since the 18th century, and the creation of protocols for the restoration of structures of these kinds. Nuere has restored the framework of the Paraninfo (Great Hall) at the University of Alcalá, and built new coffered ceilings, some in places as curious as Julio Iglesias’s house in Marbella.
