Thomas Heatherwick to build new office building for El Corte Inglés at Castellana 69
It is to go up on what is currently a parking lot in front of the flagship store at Nuevos Ministerios. A property of the department store chain since 2014, this is one of the most coveted sites on Paseo de la Castellana. The building will have a total floor area of 15,000 square meters and construction is to begin early next year, for completion in 2024. According to sources within the company, El Corte Inglés plans to reap profits renting the new office spaces out to third parties, not use them as a workplace for itself.
The building will bear the signature of the firm of Thomas Heatherwick, whose design was selected over those submitted by BIG / Bjarke Ingels Group, Foster + Partners, KPF, and Nieto Sobejano. It is Heatherwick Studio’s first project in Spain, and the idea is a pioneering construction executed with “sustainable materials, advanced technology and by harnessing natural resources,” in the London studio’s words…
