Annually since 1989 the Japan Art Association has given the Praemium Imperiale, in five categories, to recognize contributions to the development and promotion of the arts worldwide. Each coming with a monetary prize of 114,000 euros, the prestigious awards have in its 25th year gone to Plácido Domingo for Music, Francis Ford Coppola for Theater/Film. Michelangelo Pistoletto for Painting, Antony Gormley for Sculpture, and David Chipperfield for Architecture. Born in 1953 in London, Chipperfiled is the author of poetically austere works like the Neues Museum in Berlin, the Museum of Modern Literature in Marbach, the City of Justice in Barcelona, and the America’s Cup Pavilion in Valencia.
