Paulo Mendes da Rocha, Praemium Imperiale 2016

30/10/2016

The architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha is among those distinguished in 2016 with the Praemium Imperiale, given yearly since 1989 by the Imperial Family of Japan and the Japan Art Association, with an endowment of 15 million yen (111,000 euros). Born in 1928, leader of the Paulista School, and 2006 Pritzker laureate, Mendes da Rocha is the undisputed master of Brazilian architecture, and author of buildings with powerful structures and a social bent that ensure him a place in the list of great 20th-century architects (see AV Monographs 161). The awardees in the other sections are painter Cindy Sherman, sculptor Annette Mesager, violinist Gidon Kremer, and filmmaker Martin Scorsese.
