The spacesuit, baptized AxEMU (Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit), will benefit from Prada’s “expertise on high-performance materials, features, and sewing techniques,” and also from technological innovation to offer unmatched safety, mobility, and flexibility thanks to the expertise of Axiom Space. Keeping in mind that the lunar surface involves a huge challenge – with abrasive dust, extreme temperatures, and cosmic radiation –, Prada has become deeply involved in the research of new materials that guarantee, in the first place, resistance, and in the second place, elegance. In this sense, the incorporation of Prada into the project has improved the flexibility of the suit, while Axiom Space has enhanced the technology of the variable suit pressure system (which allows astronauts to lift materials or kneel down easily), the regenerable CO2 scrubbing system, or the portable life support backpack to keep astronauts safe for up to eight hours.
