Famous for his expertise in the design and construction of airports, the Bordeaux-born Paul Andreu passed away in the French capital on 11 October. Educated in the tradition of the École Polytechnique, he ran a highly professional practice that took on large-scale projects, many of them milestones in the evolution of the contemporary airport as an architectural typology, such as Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Paris-Orly and those in Jakarta, Abu Dhabi, and Cairo. His logistical know-how and his talent for creating distinctive images brought him commissions of monumental nature, from the one for the Grande Arche de la Défense in Paris to that for the National Grande Theater of China in Beijing.
