Memories of Pain
29/03/2022
During the siege of Kyiv, eyes have fallen upon a recondite corner of its outskirts: Babyn Yar, a reminder of the worst deeds that humankind is capable of, has suffered collateral damage in the rain of Russian missiles, and a miraculously unscathed building seems to say that we never learn from our mistakes. Arquitectura Viva presents this colorful synagogue, along with another of calligraphic profile by the same author, Manuel Herz (Düsseldorf, 1969), two works where the architect, instead of being dragged down by the painful memory of the place, creates spaces for harmonious coexistence, materializing the words from Psalm 122: “Peace be within thy walls.”
