(1935-2008)
A member of the third generation of editors of the centenarian Barcelona-based publishing house that played a key role in the dissemination of architecture and design publications in the Spanish-speaking world, Gustavo Gili Torra died at 73, leaving a vast collection created during the thirty years he directed the prestigious firm. After studying law at the University of Barcelona and Graphic Arts in that of Stuttgart, he joined the family business in 1960, when the firm moved to a new office in the Ensanche, a horizontal prism designed by?Francesc Bassó and Joaquim Gili. Thanks to Gili Torra, at the end of the 60s the publisher specialized in architecture, with series like ‘Arquitectura y crítica’ or ‘Materiales de la ciudad’, directed by Ignasi Solà-Morales, and ‘Tecnología y sociedad’, in collaboration with Ignacio Paricio. He also left his personal imprint on the GG series ‘Arte’, and in the publication of the oeuvre of contemporary artists. In 1980 he set up a branch in Mexico, reinforcing the distribution circuit, and in the year 2002, the publisher’s one hundredth anniversary, his sons Mónica and Gabriel took over the management of the firm.
