The engineer joined the Royal Academy of Fine Arts with a defense of the territory, and shortly afterwards received the medal of the deceased Javier Manterola.

In October 2022, the Royal Academy hosted the commencement of the new academic year of the Instituto de España. Titled ‘I Am Still Learning,’ used by Goya for his late-in-life self-portrait, Luis Fernández-Galiano’s address laid down tasks that academies, in their spirit of service and critical independence, can undertake in matters concerning heritage, the landscape, and even the planet at large.

These are three spheres that lie at the very essence of civil engineering and explain its reach at different scales: a rich but insufficiently known-of heritage, a landscape dominated by the presence of works; and a planet beset by extreme climate.
