Refurbishment of A Panda da Dá estate in As Pontes (A Coruña)

The winner of the bid to refurbish the estate A Panda da Dá, located in in As Pontes (A Coruña), has been announced. Launched by the firm Finsa with the backing of David Chipperfield’s Fundación RIA, the project aims to revamp a 410-hectare property in both architectural and landscaping terms. It seeks to turn the place into a facility for training and research in the forestry sector, besides consolidating it as a meeting spot for entities involved in sustainable management of the territory and the value chain of wood.
The jury – Aurora Armental, Graça Correia, and Carme Pinós – has selected the proposal submitted by Atelier Ander Bados, Estudio Copla, Bamba Studio, TO, and Senén Rivero. Titled ‘El bosque de la fiesta,’ the project scored high in integrating the existing heritage with a contemporary vision, one which is both respectful and creative in its tapping of the productive and social uses of the environs.
The winning team receives a prize of 20,000 euros, besides the contract to develop the project all the way. The others shortlisted – Arrokabe Arquitectos; Brandão Costa Arquitectos; João Mendes Ribeiro and Luísa Bebiano; Colab and Assemble – each get 5,000 euros in recognition of the quality of their designs.
Fundación RIA played a key role in the process, drawing up preliminary studies that led to the definition of a new functional program for the estate, and supporting Finsa in planning, developing, and publicizing the competition.
On view for the public since 28 May at Casa RIA, the foundation’s headquarters in Santiago de Compostela, is an exhibition where all the finalists’ entries can be examined in detail.
