Christian Richters
Listening to the Swan Song
Born in 1979 in the old German Democratic Republic, Christian Richter was still a child when the Berlin Wall fell. Many buildings were abandoned in East Germany after the Reunification, and the young photographer found his source of inspiration in the fascinating beauty of those neglected, mysterious places, which he broke into to take pictures. Factories, chapels, churches, ballrooms, swimming pools, hospitals, theaters... For over ten years now Richter has visited hundreds of derelict buildings across Europe, constructing images like those that form his ‘Abandoned’ series, and that, like the swan song, are both beautiful and sad.
