Born in Almería in 1930 and recently deceased, Siquier was one of the key figures of Spanish avant-garde photography, and his work with the AFAL group earned international attention. In 1956 he started a documentary project on La Chanca, a poor neighborhood by the Alcazaba quarry in Almería (southeast Spain). The town, already in a state of neglect in the late 19th century, was plunged into misery during the post-war years.
