AV Monografías 252: Grafton Architects

01/04/2023

From their Dublin-based studio, Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara – Grafton Architects – rethink urban landscapes and study the relevance of contemporary architecture. Over more than forty years of practice, the studio has completed, in Ireland and internationally, a body of work that has merited the most prestigious architectural distinctions, including the Pritzker Prize (2020), the RIBA Gold Medal (2020), the Mies van der Rohe Award (2022), and their appointment as curators of the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2018. Coherent and essential, bold and vigorous, the buildings by Grafton Architects are born of critical reflection and sensitive dialogue with the existing context. This approach is reflected in the sixteen works and projects included in this monograph, organized into four sections and preceded by a text in which the architects themselves express their interests and concerns. An introductory essay by Stanislaus von Moos analyzes the intellectual gravitas and spatial ambition of office; and as a coda, the essay and four projects that compose ‘Fragments of the Future’ invite to explore the new path the office will take in the coming years.
