1944-2018

On 14 May, at 74 years of age, Antoni Ubach i Nuet passed away in Barcelona. The architect and founder, together with his inseparable partner Miquel Espinet, of Espinet / Ubach Arquitectes, graduated from the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB), and combined teaching with a demanding professional career. As a professional, he led one of the most active studios in Catalonia during the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, and his work encompassed from interior design to urban planning and construction. He is the author of memorable buildings, including recent ones like the extension of the Hispania Restaurant in Arenys de Mar (2008), the housing for young people in Mataró (2009), or the Xiroi Kindergarten in Barcelona (2002), as well as the new Vall d’Hebron Hospital, won together with BAAS in a competition held in 2016. As far as teaching is concerned, Ubach was a professor of Architectural Design at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), but he also dedicated time to writing manuals and monographs, and to administrative responsibilities like the Vicepresidency of the Caja de Arquitectos, of which he was founding partner.
