Pol Taburet at the Hexagons Pavilion

On view through 20 April at the historic Hexagons Pavilion in Madrid’s Casa de Campo park, designed by the architects José Antonio Corrales and Ramón Vázquez Molezún, is ‘Oh, If I Only Could Listen,’ an exhibition of the Parisian artist Pol Taburet. Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and organized by the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation, it presents an exceptional selection of more than ten paintings, besides drawings and sketches, that depict magical creatures in constant transformation. In Taburet’s words, these are “characters in metamorphosis between the feminine, the masculine, the animal and the luminous, almost extraterrestrial.”

Also on display are pieces specially created for this space, which are the result of several visits made to the Prado Museum, and in particular of a thorough study of Goya’s Black Paintings, reflected in the use of a palette of dark tones.

Taburet’s work strikes up a dialogue with the architecture of the pavilion, which was built for the Brussels University Exposition of 1958 and awarded the Gold Medal thereof. Thanks to the montage conceived by the architect Marcos Corrales, the essence of the original architecture is preserved, offering visitors a full artistic experience of paintings complemented with a soundtrack, writings, drawings, and sketches by the artist himself.
