Marcel Gautherot, ‘A Brazilian Modernist’

01/01/2014

Author of the famous images of the construction of Brasilia, Marcel Gautherot is one of the main figures of contemporary Brazilian photography. Born in Paris in 1910, he studied at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs, specializing in interior and furniture design before dedicating his career exclusively to photography. In 1940 he moved to Brazil, influenced by the reading of Jorge Amado’s Jubiabá, and established his residence in Rio de Janeiro, where he worked until his death in 1996. He took stock of the evolution of modern architecture in the country through the work of Lucio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer or Roberto Burle Marx, coming to be known as the ‘most artistic of all photographers,’ in words of Costa.
