Biological Station in Garducho

“A solitary and unique building located in the middle of nothing, which performs in this way as a symbolic piece”. This is how Arcadi Pla, jury president of the FAD Awards, referred to the Biological Station in Garducho, Mourão (Portugal), by the young João Maria Ventura Trindade, who has obtained the prize in the category of Architecture. Rising one meter above the highest level of the terrain and organized around a large central courtyard, the project transforms three existing buildings to obtain a larger built area while affecting the land as little as possible. Photovoltaic panels on the roof and a rainwater deposit ensure energy and water self-sufficiency, essential due to the station’s location. The award in the category of City and Landscape went to the Water Park, by the Barcelona studio of Iñaki Alday and Margarita Jover, built for Expo 2008 in Zaragoza. In Interior?Design the prize was for Francesc Rifé, from Barcelona, for the Sevillian restaurant Gastromium. Lastly, in the field of Ephemeral Interventions the winning project was the attraction Miramiralls in Barcelona’s Tibidabo Park, by Daniel Freixes.
