Alternatural Pavilion in Llanes (Asturias)

Gabriel Ruiz-Larrea

In the Asturian municipality of Llanes, close to the Posada de Babel inn, rises this pavilion 13 meters long and 2.8 meters tall at most. A work of Gabriel Ruiz-Larrea, the structure of timber frames is raised on a block of prefabricated concrete and its outer skin combines bastard mortar of cement, lime, sand, and black iron oxide. The Alternatural project connects sculpture, architecture, and landscaping. Ruiz-Larrea explains: “Compressing the space it sits on and creating a hollow or void to fill with meaning through experience itself makes it possible to renounce a pacified picture of the natural in favor of a more complex idea that must be renegotiated.”
