Visual Thought
Architectural theory and criticism get mixed up with their dissemination, a process in which words are as important as images. Gathered here are texts that explore these mechanisms of mediation, scrutinized in the introductory articles, which also discuss the role of symbolic economy in the diffusion of works. The first section presents the past half-century's most significant books, magazines, films, and photographs; the second focuses on architectural publishing, in both the Albertian tradition of texts without images and the Palladian one where illustrations predominate; the third examines some of the milestones of theoretical reflection on the discipline, and also deals with the link between buildings and philosophical thought; the fourth and last section looks at the practice of criticism through a selection of essays; and the book closes with first-person notes which perhaps can throw light on the everyday reality of an architectural critic.
