Many of the architects featured here, whose dates of birth fall between 1943 and 1954, are Pritzker laureates, so it is hard to imagine a similar concentration of excellence. I feel fortunate to have shared the road through architecture and the world with this constellation of talent, still active but for the very sad absence of the dazzling Zaha Hadid, whose early death nevertheless did not prevent her from making the discipline turn on its hinges. The mere mention of some of them – Zumthor, Nouvel, Souto de Moura, Perrault, Chipperfield, Lacaton & Vassal, Kuma – is enough to evoke autonomous universes of creativity without which the history of recent architecture cannot be written, while the echo of others – Léon Krier, Daniel Libeskind – rings as much in their work as in the formal currents, from postmodernism to deconstruction, that have articulated the debate in our field and other artistic and academic areas.
